We’re celebrating our 10th year of ministry! For the next ten weeks, I’ll share with you 10 of the key ways we love in the name of Christ.
At the top of our list and coming in at #1 — Caring Conversations. This is how it all begins when a neighbor reaches out for help. We don’t just ask a list of questions to fill out a form. We offer empathy and understanding. We take the time to listen and respond.
Although it was 10:00 in the morning, I woke Sarah up with my phone call. “Hello”, she answered with a groggy voice barely audible.
“I’m so sorry,” I apologized, “I was just following up on your delivery of a blessing basket today.”
“Oh, no, it’s OK. I was up late.” I went over the details of the delivery, confirmed her address, then I asked, “Sarah, are you ready for a church recommendation? I know a really great pastor in town.”
She hesitated, “You know. I wasn’t ready before. I’m an atheist, but my grandma just died. I just can’t believe there isn’t a Heaven.”
Our conversation continued and I was able to share the hope of Heaven. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning, or crying or pain.”
“That’s a beautiful thought,” she said.
“Yes, yes it is,” I assured her.
“Do you happen to have a Bible you could send with my blessing basket today?”
After picking out a new Bible, I highlighted and bookmarked Revelation 21:4 for Sarah to find the reassuring words of God’s grace. It all began with simply having a caring conversation.
